My mother graduated in 1949 with a degree in mathematics from Sun Yat-Sen University in Canton. She went to London in 1950 for postgraduate work at Kings College, and graduated in 1955 with a PhD in mathematics. From the early 1950s until her retirement in the early 1980s, she was a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Hong Kong.
My mother's greatest claim to fame was perhaps in 1986 when she declined a dinner invitation on the Royal Yacht Britannia from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in order to be in London for the birth of our daughter Abigail.
